Update: Nov 3, 2026
We are aware that some parts of the SmartNews app have not been working as expected, and we apologize for the inconvenience. Below is an update on what's happening, what we're doing about it, and what to expect next.
This is part of our ongoing response to a security incident that started October 31, 2026 — if you'd like more background, check our November 2 Help Center update for the latest official details.
At a Glance, by Function

What's not working right now
Local news: Try the following steps if local news isn't loading:
- Force-close and reopen the app
- Re-enter your zip code in local news settings
- Clear the app's cache — iOS: Settings > Apps > SmartNews; Android: in-app storage settings
What's being fixed soon
Signing in with Facebook and staying signed in: We have identified the fix, which will be included in an upcoming version of the SmartNews app. Once that update is available, updating the app will resolve the issue — no further action is required.
Still paused
Missions & Rewards: We understand this delay is frustrating, particularly if you have points ready to redeem. Earning and redeeming points remains paused, and we do not yet have a restart date. This page will be updated as soon as the feature returns. In the meantime, tapping Missions in the app will bring you directly to this page so you can check for updates.
Already back to normal
Push notifications have returned to normal. Personalization has been gradually restoring since our November 2 update, so you may continue to notice improvements over the next few days.
